You would like to do an internship or training in the U.S.? You already found a position in a host company? Fantastic, you just need to apply for the required J1 visa at the US Embassy or Consulate. Before doing this you need the DS-2019 form from a J1 visa sponsor. Its official name is "Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status". This document is issued after successful verification of your documents. The DS-2019 thus confirms your suitability for the J1 status in order to subsequently receive the J1 visa at the Embassy.

DS-2019 – How to Get It

You receive the DS-2019 from an exchange organization such as Intrax whom the U.S. Department of State has authorized to check that you and your host company fulfill all J1 requirements for a cultural exchange program aimed at obtaining insight into American business methods. By issuing the DS-2019 document, Intrax guarantees eligibility and thus assumes sponsorship over your stay as an intern or trainee in the USA. This is what the J1 visa service USA is about.

The DS-2019 document needs to get printed and signed on American soil. Intrax headquarters is located in San Francisco and has been issuing and signing the DS-2019 for various cultural exchange programs for more than 30 years.

Intrax ships the DS-2019 in the original directly to your home. You need to sign and date the first page. You will bring the original document to the U.S. consulate for your visa appointment and you have to carry it with you when you enter the USA. The form is created using the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The SEVIS database allows the US Department of Homeland Security, as well as the U.S. Department of State to directly see the data of all trainees who are in the USA.

The DS-2019 also contain information about admission to the USA at the border or port of entry, program extension, the maximum duration of a J1 program and changes of visa status. It lists the minimum requirement for your insurance. This is just for your information since Intrax has enrolled you in an insurance which is included in the program fees.

Program Dates on Your DS-2019

The DS-2019 is, so to speak, your ticket to the US and always contains the latest information about your stay. If the duration of your internship changes again after the U.S. consulate has issued your J1 visa, the former data remain in your visa. The changes are only made on the DS-2019 document.

Program Extension

If you extend your training period, you are legally allowed to remain and train in the U.S. once a new DS-2019 Form has been issued, even if the J-1 visa has expired. If an extension is granted, you will receive an Extension DS-2019 Form covering the additional months of the training program. Please keep the original DS-2019 Form attached to the Extension DS-2019 Form.

Please note that in case of a program extension, you may not leave and reenter the USA if your travels are after the visa expiration date in your passport. If you intend to travel outside of the U.S. during the extension period and your J1 visa has expired, you must apply for a new J1 visa at a U.S. Consular Post in order to re-enter the U.S.  You cannot re-enter the U.S. without a valid J1 visa.

Travel Validation on Your DS-2019

During your internship or training program you are allowed to leave the USA and return. You must first send the DS-2019 to Intrax headquarters to date and sign that you are still in good standing and thus remain eligible for the J1 visa status. Page one of your DS-2019 Form contains a section for such travel validation. Please plan ahead accordingly and calculate sufficient time to send and receive the DS-2019 from Intrax before leaving the country.

The travel validation is valid for one year, thus permitting multiple entries.

No Travel Validation

You do not need such travel validation for trips to Canada, Mexico or the adjacent islands. However, you always need to carry your passport with the visa and your DS-2019 with you during your travels.
